Before returning to the Father, Jesus promised His followers that the Holy Spirit would come and dwell within them. This promise still stands for believers today as we continue our journey in the Christian life. The Spirit of God is not merely a distant force or passing feeling, but a living Person who dwells within us and brings new life.
Because of this, the Christian life is not meant to be lived in our own strength. To walk faithfully with God, we must be filled with His Spirit. Without the Spirit guiding us and searching the deepest places of our hearts, we can easily fall into temptation and follow our own desires.
The Apostle Paul reminds believers of this in his letter to the Ephesians when he writes, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Paul contrasts a life controlled by earthly influences with a life directed by the Spirit of God.
When we are filled with the Spirit, we receive clarity, peace, wisdom, and strength for daily living. Being filled with the Spirit is not meant to be a one-time experience, but a daily surrender to God as He continues to shape and guide our lives.
